Space Week in Marino School - Oct 2020

Sparks in The Sky

The students in the Senior Bubble have been very busy since returning in September. The theme in Joe’s class for the first month was Space. We explored many aspects of Space and completed a range of activities that included researching planets in the Solar System, designing a new planet, creating space passports and making a rocket.

The culmination of our Space Month came with the virtual visit of Heidi Thiemann. Heidi returned for a second year to speak with our students and take questions on all topics related to space. Heidi is a research student in the Faculty of Science in the Open University. She is working on a PhD researching variable stars. She presented an amazing slide show and encouraged the students to explore space from their own home and informed them of the opportunity to help chart and name unidentified stars in space. As Shakespeare said: ‘The skies are painted with unnumber’d sparks/ They are all fire and everyone doth shine…’ A great inspiration for our aspiring astronomers!

After the slideshow, Heidi listened to the many questions the senior students had crafted and took great care to answer each one with attention and clarity. We look forward to speaking to Heidi once again next year during Space Week.
