N11 Wicklow Butterflies

N11 Butterfly Project

Marino School was invited to join other schools locally in the development of a Butterfly Art Project along the N11 towards Arklow. The sculptor, Michael Johnson, visited Marino School on the 10th Feb 2016 to meet our students, host a workshop with them and brainstorm ideas for the design of an N11 butterfly. Wicklow County Council wishes to acknowledge Marino School’s involvement in the creation of the wing patterns of the newly installed butterflies on the new section of the M11 earlier this year. The sculpture has been met with high praise for both the execution of the project but also the involvement and creative work by the many groups and particularly schools involved in the wing designs. Marino School was presented with a model of the ‘Marino butterfly’ with wing designs created by our student group and also, a book commemorating the artistic experience created by sculptor Mike Johnson. Some students can see these butterflies, as they travel to and from school each day!
